Work during Study Options

ON-CAMPUS WORK

A student can work on campus without a work permit provided working student holds a valid study permit and studying full-time in a DLI. A student can work on different campuses of registered institutions within the same municipality.

OFF-CAMPUS WORK

Some International students can work off-campus up to 20 hours per week without a work permit, provided student is a full-time enrolled student at a DLI in a program with a minimum duration of 6 months.

CO-OP WORK PERMIT PROGRAM

This program allows students to work as a mandatory part of their secondary or post-secondary education provided the applicant is a full-time student at DLI. Co-op work must not be more than 50% of the total duration of the program being pursued by the candidate.

Post Graduate Work Permit Program

This program is designed for international students to gain valuable work experience in the Canadian workforce through an open work permit with a duration of up to 3 years. The student must have graduated in the last 90 days from a program with the duration of minimum eight months from a DLI who is participating in this post-graduate work permit program.

  • A student may receive a work permit for three years if graduated from a program with the duration of minimum two years or more.
  • A student may receive a work permit for the same length of study if graduated from a program with the duration from minimum eight months to up to 2 years.

An eligible student must apply for PGWP within 90 days of receiving written confirmation (Marks display online with graduation status, an official transcript, graduation letter) of graduation from the institution. The student must have a valid study permit at the time of application.

Work Permit Options for Spouses / Common Law Partner's in various Categories

Work Permit for a Spouse/Common-Law Partner of a Full-Time Student at a DLI

This program allows a spouse or a common-law partner to participate in Canadian Labour Market with an applicable work permit, provided the person is a legal spouse or a common-law partner of a full-time student who is participating at an applicable DLI under this program.

 

Work Permit for a Spouse / Common-Law Partner of a Skilled Worker in Canada

This program allows a spouse or a common-law partner to work in the Canadian market with an open work permit, provided applicant’s spouse have proper authorization to work.

The applicant is eligible under this category if the applicant’s spouse or common-law partner:

  • Holds a work permit with a validity of at least six months, works under one of the National Occupation Classification (NOC) O, A, B and resides in Canada during his/her employment.
  • Holds no work permit but does have authority to work, must provide evidence to work for six months under NOC O, A, B and resides in Canada during his/her employment.

 

Work Permit for a Spouse/ Common-Law Partner of a Permanent Resident or Citizen of Canada

This program allows a spouse/common-law partner of a permanent resident or a citizen of Canada to enter in the Canadian workforce, provided the sponsorship application is made to be processed with the presence of a spouse/common-law partner in Canada.

  • The work Permit application may be completed with the application of sponsorship or
  • The work Permit application may be completed after the completion of a sponsorship application or
  • The work Permit application may be completed once become approved principle.

Work for Approved In Principle

You may work in Canada on an open work permit for up to 1 year if you have received the document from IRCC stating that your application is “approved in principle.”

Work for a Specific Employer & Extension of Work Permit

This program allows a candidate to work for a specific employer with applicable duration and conditions. The applicant must have a positive or neutral Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) document received by an employer from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC).

The eligible worker can apply for an extension of work permit in applicable conditions within Canada before 30 days of the expiry of the current work permit.

Work without Work Permit

Not all applicants required to have a work permit in Canada. Followings may be eligible to receive an authorization to work in Canada without a valid work permit provided candidate meet all other applicable conditions:

  • International students can work maximum 20 hours per week while studying and 40 hours per week during scheduled breaks provided, they meet the applicable conditions.
  • Working for up to the maximum duration of 6 months.
  • NAFTA business visitors
  • Public Speakers (up to 5 days)
  • Athletes and coaches
  • Performing artists and key support staff for a limited time provided they meet the applicable conditions
